Programs at Universal Academy Learning Center

Infants (3 months to 12 months old) – Adult to child ratio: 1 to 4.  In our infant room, each child is cared for according to his/her own schedule.  Feeding, playing, and sleeping occur in natural cycles. A warm, loving qualified caregiver encourages each infant to develop and master cognitive, motor, and social skills such as recognition of people and objects, reaching and grasping, crawling, and smiling. The infant develops a sense of trust, gives and receives affection, and learns to understand simple directions.

Toddlers (13 months to 24 months) – Adult to child ratio: 1 to 6. In our toddler program, children listen to stories, talk and interact with adults and peers, participate in planned activities including art and music, and dramatize important events in their life with thoughtfully selected play equipment.  They are given many opportunities for learning to share and cooperate with others in small groups. These activities, combined with lots of affection and support, contribute to the development of language, a positive self-image, and independence.

Toddlers (2 year olds) – Adult to child ratio: 1 to 11.  In our program for two year olds, we provide an environment that supports and encourages exploration through routines and experiences for literacy and language with stories, books, playing with toys and blocks, creating with art, music and movement, nurturing their curiosity and guiding them through this important time of their development for successful learning.

Preschoolers (3 year olds)Adult to child ratio: 1 to 15.  In our program, children are provided with an environment which encourages discovery, exploration based on abilities and interests. Teachers offer opportunities for both cooperative learning and individual thinking.  Children begin to develop school readiness concepts through fun activities involving letters, numbers, shapes and colors.

VPK (4 year olds) – Adult to child ratio: 1 to 11. This program is designed as a transitional program for children who are in the year before entering kindergarten. Developmentally appropriate activities that respect the whole child are at the heart of our curriculum. The teaching of math, reading, and writing readiness skills is integrated with music, art, nature studies, storytelling, experiments, word-play, drama and rhythmic activities. Math readiness goals include identifying shapes and numbers, solving simple addition and subtraction problems, and identifying fractions, coins and time. Language arts readiness goals include identifying letters and their basic sounds, identifying colors, sequencing, retellings stories and identifying their details, and distinguishing fact from fantasy.

School-Aged After School Program (ages 5-12) – Adult-to-child ratio: 1 to 20. Children who need a safe and enriching environment after school will enjoy the program. Research has shown that immediately after school, children need some time to relax and just “be kids.” We allow for this by giving children free time outdoors and a snack before starting homework followed by enriching activities and play.
